Hot Foot Springwire

The Hot Foot Springwire system is great for protecting:

How It Works

Hot Foot Springwire is a system of posts and wire strung between springs. Hot Foot provides a variety of hardware to set up your posts and wire on a variety of surfaces including stonework, wood, along pipes, and along roof peaks. Once in place, any larger birds (note: does not work for smaller birds like sparrows and starlings) that land on the spring-loaded wire will move up and down and from side to side - a very unpleasant though harmless experience for the bird. They will immediately take off again and warn the rest of the flock of the "danger," seeking out a more stable roosting spot.

Best of all, the thin wires and small posts keep an extremely low profile so they do not take away from the natural beauty of the surrounding architecture. Hot Foot Springwire is a safe, humane, and cost-effective way to keep your structures bird-free.

For ledges up to 3" in width, only one wire is needed. For ledges 4" to 7", two wires are required (of alternating heights), and so on to cover the full width of the surface. The alternating height pattern is to be more confusing to the bird and adds to their difficulty in being able to defeat the system.


For application time estimates use the following as a guide. However note that the actual application time will depend on the type of access equipment being used on-site. Ladders and boom trucks for example have to be moved and this increases the application time over what can be achieved with clear access to the surface with no access equipment required.

Based on actual field trials the following figures were achieved

  • One person can apply approximately. 40 ft. of Springwire (single track) per hour onto a masonry surface.
  • One person can apply approximately. 50ft. of Springwire (two tracks) in approximately 2 hours. This is a total of 100 running feet of material.
  • Two persons can apply approximately 300ft. of Springwire (four tracks) in approximately 16 hours. This is a total of 1,200 running feet and 32 labor hours.
  • wo persons can apply 9 tracks of Springwire, each track 10 ft. long, to a recessed ledge in one hour; total therefore is two man hours.

Consider for example a window ledge or parapet wall.


The first track of Springwire is set no more than 1 inch back from the leading edge of the ledge or parapet. This track is set no more than 3.5" high. When drilling, insert a plastic, dome headed anchor (Cat. No. PA) into the ledge where the track is to commence. A 4.5" stainless steel rod (Cat No. ROD45) is tapped into this anchor to a depth of 1". (A 6 inch double-headed post can also be inserted if the applicator wishes to run a double track of springwire at the leading edge. If so, contact Hot Foot for specific instructions on this system).

Stick-on-posts bases (Hot Foot Cat. No. PB) then have either 3.5" stainless steel post (Hot Foot Cat. No. ROD 35 )tapped into the hole at the top of the base and this assembly is then adhered to the surface every 5ft along the springwire path using silicone (Hot Foot Cat. No. SIL) or other adhesive. At the other end of the springwire track, another end post is inserted in an identical manner to that described above. So, you have an end post at each end of the ledge, or parapet wall and a series of stick-on-bases applied every 5ft.

A large stainless steel spring (Hot Foot Cat. No. LS) is fitted to each end post. Springwire cable (Hot Foot Cat. No. SC 300) is the attached to the loop on the spring by running the free end through a “ferrule” (Hot Foot Cat. No. SF), through the loop, then back through the ferrule and crimping tightly using an appropriate crimping tool (Hot Foot Cat. No. CRIMP is recommended). Feed the springwire cable from this end through all of the posts which were previously inserted in the stick-on-post bases and leave it unconnected at the far end of the ledge or parapet.

Small Springs (Hot Foot Cat. No. SS) must now be inserted ever 12 ft. along the springwire track in order to maintain tension during the life of the installation. Cut the wire every 12 ft. and insert a small spring using a springwire ferrule exactly as you do for the large spring at the end post.

When all small springs have been fitted, place another large spring at the end of the track attached to the end post and run the springwire cable through a ferrule, through the large spring and then back through the ferrule. Tighten until the springwire is tight enough so the large springs at both ends are extended to 50% of their unstretched length.

This completes the installation of the first track, at the leading edge of the ledge. For wide ledges, additional tracks must be run set no more than 3 inches apart. The second track should be set 5 inches high, the third track 3.5 inches high, the fourth track 5 inches high etc. in this offset pattern. The 5 inch high track is installed in exactly the same manner as the leading edge track but instead of a 4.5" end post, use a 6" end post (Hot Foot Cat. No. ROD 60). Instead of 3.5" posts being inserted into the stick-on-post bases, use a 5 inch post (Hot Foot Cat. No. ROD 50)



  1. The track of springwire located at all leading edges MUST be set no more than one inch back from this edge. If necessary bend the posts so the track of springwire cable runs as close as possible to the leading edges. The closer to the edge the more effective will be the application
  2. The outer track of springwire must be set 3.5" high above all parts of the ledge surface. This is achieved by using 4.5" end posts fitted to a depth of 1 inch and 3.5" stick-on-posts fitted regularly every 5 ft along the track.
  3. The Springwire repelling system is not infallible like Hot Foot Gel or Deter. However if you use end post protection as shown, then the system will have the highest possible chance of success
  4. On short runs of less than 10ft use only one large spring per track and if you are fitting multiple rows then offset these springs from end to end.
